You can also plug in the Jump Starter through the vehicle's cigarette lighter receptacle for emergency starting if the unit you purchase comes with a 12 volt DC cord.

While this method is preferable to some (since you don't even have to open the hood), it requires a different procedure. This method slowly transfers the power from the Jump Starter's internal battery to the vehicle's battery so you must wait a few minutes before attempting to start the "dead" vehicle. Reason: The wiring in the circuit to the cigarette lighter is a much smaller diameter (gauge) wire and it simply cannot handle all the power (amps) demanded when cranking over the engine. The cigarette lighter circuit is also fused to prevent a high amperage current draw.
